Accidents Happen

Accidents Happen

It is October, 1997

“Wrapped in Plastic”
plays out of her
speakers

I have not lit my cigarette,
I hold it in my hand
for when we are further away
from school

I’m looking out the window
so I can give no warning
of approaching brake lights

We do not stop peacefully
I am thrown
but caught
by the seat belt

My left hand
hits the window
with thirty-five mile an hour force

A minor accident,
we all walk away from

I do not know
the extent of the damage,
but I’ll find out
over a year later

This phantom that burns
and wields a knife
has a name

I do not like to say it
out loud.
